George Ball
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University Kelley School of Business professor George Ball will testify before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging during the hearing titled “Prescription for Trouble: Drug Safety, Supply Chains, and the Risk to Aging Americans.”
The hearing will explore the threats presented by generic drug quality and supply chain issues and highlight the public health and national security risks posed by vulnerable supply chains that are over reliant on foreign generic drugs from China and India. It will also address dangers that quality issues associated with foreign generic drugs pose to seniors and highlight tragic cases of adverse events.
The testimony will draw upon recently published research by Ball and colleagues that find an increase in serious drug adverse events for generic drugs made in India compared to equivalently-designed generic drugs made in the U.S.
Ball’s testimony will also address two key policy recommendations emanating from that published study: Transparency in the generic drug supply chain and enhancements to FDA’s foreign plant inspection strategy.
A livestream and written testimony will be available via the Senate Aging Committee website.
Ball is available for media interviews after the testimony from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 and 8 to 10 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19.
