Kelley professor to receive IU Bloomington’s Outstanding Junior Faculty Award

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – George Ball, assistant professor of operations and decision technologies and ArcelorMittal Supply Chain Faculty Fellow, is among an accomplished group of faculty members who will receive the 2019 Indiana University Bloomington Outstanding Junior Faculty Award.

The award is designed to identify promising tenure-track faculty who have not yet been awarded tenure and to provide resources to further develop their scientific, scholarly or artistic activities. It is presented by the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs.

The Outstanding Junior Faculty Award is the most prestigious campus-wide award for pre-tenured faculty and is intended to recognize IU’s most promising young faculty. Those selected to receive this honor have begun to develop nationally-recognized research programs, as well as making important contributions to IU’s teaching and service missions.

Ball’s research interests focus on product recalls, specifically issues related to causes of recalls and the decision to recall. He has studied these issues in the auto, pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Kelley Direct Online MBA again ranked second in the U.S. and fourth worldwide by Financial Times

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Kelley Direct students here for Kelley Connect Week received some additional good news Monday, when they learned along with the rest of the business school about new rankings from the Financial Times, which again ranked the program fourth worldwide and second among U.S. institutions.

One of several top-rated offerings of the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, Kelley Direct a year ago moved up into those positions in FT’s rankings and has maintained them within a competitive field. While the top four programs in FT’s rankings of online MBA programs remain unchanged, there were many shifts among schools in the top 10 and beyond.

In addition, Kelley Direct was No. 1 overall in terms of research rank and online delivery and its career services were ranked second.

Kelley School conference examines healthcare industry’s role in fighting the opioid epidemic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Dr. Jennifer Walthall, secretary of the Indiana Family & Social Services Administration, will keynote “The Healthcare Industry in Pain Management and Addressing the Opioid Crisis,” a conference being presented Feb. 15 by the Indiana University Kelley School of Business.

Walthall will kick off the conference, the latest event in the Indiana Life Sciences Collaboration Conference Series, organized by Kelley’s Center for the Business of Life Sciences. It will take place at Cook Medical headquarters, 750 Daniels Way in Bloomington. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and wrap up at 2:45 p.m.

An IU study released last year found that opioid misuse costs Indiana over $4 billion annually, or $11 million daily. The conference will focus on how the healthcare industry can play a key role in combating this crisis and find alternative treatments for dealing with pain other than opioids.

Representatives from providers, pharmaceuticals and medical device companies will provide an overview and an update on a wide range of initiatives and current efforts.

“While other conferences have focused on the scope and causes of the opioid crisis, we hope to contribute to the effort to find solutions for what is perhaps Indiana’s biggest public health crisis,” said George Telthorst, director of the Center for the Business of Life Sciences. “This crisis emerged because of many factors – some well-intended and others unintended – but the healthcare industry has accumulated much knowledge that hopefully can effectively fight this challenge.” (more…)

IU Kelley School establishes campus-wide case competition for socially minded students

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Socially-minded students at Indiana University Bloomington are invited to participate in a new case competition that this year will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County.

Hosted by the IU Kelley School of Business and its Kelley Institute for Social Impact, participants will help Habitat analyze its current operating model and propose ideas for future development.

The Kelley Impact Competition is open to all undergraduate IU students. Organizers welcome participation from teams of four students who demonstrate a variety of academic and professional interests.

In addition to monetary prizes for the top three teams, the winning team will receive $10,000 in seed money to support their idea and hopefully create lasting change in the community.

“People are financially incentivized to come up with the next big startup idea more than they are to solve today’s major social issues,” said Kelley 2011 alumnus Lance Breitstein, whose gift made the competition possible.

“This competition seeks to realign those incentives so that we can have the smartest students in the country learning more about the issues in their community, getting involved in a solution, and making a real difference in the world around them,” Breitstein added.

Financial Times Global MBA rankings highlight the value of Kelley School’s career services and research activities

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business made a major move upward in the Financial Times’ annual survey of the top 100 MBA programs in the world.

In rankings released Jan. 28, the school’s Full-Time MBA Program went from 57th to 43rd overall and rose to 22nd among all U.S. business schools. Kelley ranks sixth among all U.S. public institutions and third in the Big Ten.

The Kelley School’s rise in FT’s rankings comes at a time when many traditional residential MBA programs in the United States are facing growing competition, not only from each other, but also from business schools around the world. The FT rankings are a popular guide across Europe and Asia and are well respected among international students.

The FT’s ranking methodology involves 20 data points, including salary increases for alumni, international mobility and percentages of female and international faculty. A key strength for Kelley is its career services ranking – No. 5 worldwide.

“We’re always pleased with recognition of our programs, particularly when it reflects the school’s international prominence,” said Idalene “Idie” Kesner, dean of the Kelley School and the Frank P. Popoff Chair of Strategic Management.

“Business is global, and so too is the Kelley School. We understand the value of a culturally diverse student body and the importance of engaging our students in international projects,” Kesner added. “These aspects, along with our highly ranked career services program, are valued by our students and recruiters, and they enrich the educational experience for all.  Simply stated, we are developing business leaders with a global mindset.”

IU’s Kelley School of Business shares first-place honors with UC Berkeley’s Haas School at National Diversity Case Competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Capping off the largest National Diversity Case Competition ever was another historic first, a first-ever tie for first place.

A team of students from the host school, the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, shared the 2019 top honors with a team from the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley (pictured above).

“This tells you how rigorous the competition was,” said Diana Rath, a senior at Kelley majoring in marketing, professional sales, and technology management from Lawrence, Indiana. “We knew from the beginning that it was going to be tough, but that motivated us to work even harder.

“The judges even spent an extra 30 minutes deliberating, which shows how great all of the presentations were,” added Rath, who served as the team’s captain.

Also representing Kelley were Liwam Gebreslassie, a sophomore majoring in accounting and finance from Indianapolis; and Sharod Holmes, a junior majoring entrepreneurship from Merrillville, Indiana.

The National Diversity Case Competition is held annually the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day and brings together some of the best and most diverse talent in undergraduate education from across the country. This was the eighth year for the event, which took place Jan. 18-19.

The two teams – which each received a $6,250 cash prize — emerged victorious from among a record field of 42 teams. All focused on a case provided by Target Corp. that examined the role that small-concept stores can play in urban areas.

Kelley School accounting students ecstatic about winning the Deloitte FanTAXtic National Case Study Competition

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Many accountants still are determining how the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 impacts clients. Advising clients on tax planning related to the new law was at the heart of a case adeptly handled last weekend by students in Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

The Kelley School team took top honors at the 18th Annual Deloitte FanTAXtic National Case Study Competition, defeating eight other business schools that sent student teams to the finals. In all, nearly 60 teams representing more than 40 colleges and universities participated in regional qualifier events at Deloitte offices throughout the country in early November.

This was the second year that Kelley has sent a team to the competition and the first time it competed in this national competition. Other national finalists included second-place finisher, the University of Illinois-Chicago; third-place team Syracuse University and Fordham University, the University of Nebraska, North Carolina State University, the University of Northern Iowa, Texas A&M University and the University of Utah.

“Our Kelley team was amazing,” said Sandra Owen, senior lecturer of accounting and the Kelley team’s faculty advisor. “Although only one of the students had even taken a tax class, they were able to research and understand the relevant tax law, including some challenging new tax provisions, apply it to their client’s situation, and explain their analysis and recommendations clearly and concisely to the client.

“I am so impressed with how well they performed, especially under the tight time constraints at the national competition, and how well they worked together as a team,” she added.

2019 National Diversity Case Competition is the biggest one yet; attracts teams from 32 states

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The National Diversity Case Competition continues to grow in scope and size, with seven more teams coming to the Indiana University Kelley School of Business for the Jan. 18-19 event, now in its eighth year.

Nearly 170 business students from 42 teams are competing – up from 35 teams last year. The competition, which is held the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, brings together some of the best and most diverse talent in undergraduate education from across the nation. Among the participating schools are six historically Black colleges and universities.

Students are challenged to solve diversity-related business issues and share ideas while benefiting from workshops and networking with companies that value inclusion. This year, the competition will focus on a case provided by Target Corp. that examines the role that small-concept stores can play in urban areas.

Each four-student team must include two members from an underrepresented population. Among the 168 students participating, 38 percent are African American, 24 percent are Hispanic, 13 percent are Asian and 14 percent are multiracial. Women account for 55 percent of the competitors.

The average of grade-point average of participants is 3.33.

Many students find that participating in this event leads to leadership opportunities, internships and jobs after graduation. They will compete for $20,000 in prize money.

PwC’s Kumar shares an insider’s view of Washington and policymaking to students in Kelley’s graduate accounting programs

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and its 3/2 MBA Program welcomed Rohit Kumar, a principal at PwC LLP and leader of the firm’s tax policy services group in its Washington National Tax Services practice.

Kumar provided a unique perspective. He has extensive knowledge of government and public policy. Before joining PwC in 2013, he worked closely with three Senate leaders on Capitol Hill, including seven years with current Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, for whom he served as domestic policy director and deputy chief of staff.

He helped to develop and implement tax, trade, budget and health care policy for McConnell as well as former Sens. Trent Lott, Bill Frist and Phil Gramm.

Kumar met with Kelley students on Dec. 10 and discussed an understanding of policy issues as crucial to many companies, particularly as they develop strategies from both a technical and political perspective. PwC recruits at Kelley, particularly students in the 3/2 MBA Program, which offers them an understanding of accounting principles combined with business fundamentals.

This was the first time Kumar has visited a business school in his current leadership role at PwC.

Emergent scholars at Kelley recognized for their work on the wisdom of crowds and healthcare communities

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Two emerging scholars in decision sciences and business analytics at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business have been honored for early research that is expected to make important contributions to the field.

Asa Palley, an assistant professor of operations and decision sciences (pictured left), received the Hillel Einhorn New Investigator Award at the Society for Judgment and Decision Making conference in New Orleans.

The purpose of this award is to encourage outstanding work by new researchers who have completed their Ph.D. within the last five years.

Palley won for his paper, “Extracting the Wisdom of Crowds When Information is Shared,” which is forthcoming in the journal Management Science.

“Much has been written about the wisdom of crowds – averaging the opinions of many people can perform as well or better than individual experts,” he said. “However, the wisdom of crowds is hampered when each crowd member taps into shared information in addition to their own personal reservoir of knowledge.

“We develop a new method – pivoting – that can overcome the shared information problem and thereby harness the complete wisdom of the crowd,” Palley added.
